Everything you need to know about nipple correction procedures
Inverted nipple corrections are a simple surgical procedure suitable for both women and men who suffer from inverted or flat nipples. Up to 10 to 20 percent of women suffer from inverted or flat nipples to some degree. So it is not a surprise that inverted nipple corrections are a very common cosmetic procedure at Ignite MediSpa. Utilising the latest techniques and advances in inverted nipple correction, our surgeons are able to complete the procedure in about an hour, under local anaesthetics.
What is the cause of inverted or flat nipples?
- Generally speaking, inverted or flat nipples are caused by the pull of connective tissue behind the nipple forcing it inwards, instead of allowing it to naturally protrude outwards.
- There might be excessive tightening of the breast ducts due to an imbalance in the muscle tissue that is meant to keep them erect.
- Inverted or flat nipples can also be caused by an excessive amount of connective tissue in the nipple itself.
- Many also report experiencing inverted nipples after rapidly losing a lot of weight.
Although the causes do vary from person to person (from a genetics stand-point), there are also many other factors such as lactation and pregnancy or trauma to the breast/chest and nipple areas.
Nevertheless, our plastic surgeons will carefully evaluate all of these factors and address them during your nipple correction procedure.
Who is suitable for an inverted nipple correction?
Did you know that there are several different types of nipples? ‘Normal’ nipples (most common) usually protrude a few millimeters from the areola (the darker coloured area that surrounds your nipple). Normal nipples can protrude even further during temperature changes, sexual arousal or stimulation.
Having any grade of inverted nipple or a flat nipple makes you a perfect candidate for a correction.
Below we have illustrated the different types of nipple we correct (flat and inverted):
Flat Nipple
Flat nipples don’t protrude out like ‘normal’ nipples do. Instead, they blend into the areola. Flat nipples might still ‘stick out’ during arousal, temperature changes and stimulation. Women with flat nipples may be able to breastfeed normally.
Inverted Nipple – Grade 1
These nipples occasionally become evert due to stimuli such as temperature or arousal. These nipples can also become erect to some degree as the result of manual stimulation. Breastfeeding is usually possible in this case.
Inverted Nipple – Grade 2
These nipples can be pulled out, but not easily and once they do, they will retract back into the areola quite quickly. Breast feeding is possible, but can be challenging at times.
Inverted Nipple – Grade 3
The nipples are completely retracted and cannot be pulled out even with physical manipulation. This type of nipples are severely retracted into the areola and cannot be pulled out at all. The milk ducts tend to be constricted, making breastfeeding somewhat impossible.
Why correct an inverted or flat nipple?
Inverted or flat nipples can be embarrassing for many. Moreover, in more extreme cases, inverted nipples can affect your ability to breastfeed. Also, many argue that since correcting inverted nipples is a quick and simple procedure, no men or women should put up with the discomfort.
